History: Precure wiki entry
AU History: Born a Purrloin Shifter, Siren spent most of her life in the utopic Flower Grove, singing happily with the other Pokémon and feeling "special" for being a type of Pokémon not usually seen in her community. Once a year the Pokémon all held a competition to determine the best songstress, and Siren, who loved music, worked hard to ensure it was always her. She also mentored another Pokémon, who became her only friend; they spent many carefree days singing together.
This past year her friend decided to enter the singing competition too. Siren, wishing the other Pokémon the best but understanding this made them rivals, decided they both should practice in private. On the day of the auditions, however, her friend's singing voice blew Siren away - Siren acknowledged her friend deserved to be considered the best songstress in the Flower Grove but wasn't sure where that left her since she'd always been #1 before. She started avoiding her friend and watching from the outside as all the other Pokémon got along, not realizing it was her own pride that was preventing her from being part of the group and looking for something - anything - but herself to resent.
Then the humans from Union discovered the Flower Grove.
Suddenly the other Pokémon all had something far more interesting than ever before to explore: these humans brought Pokémon they'd never seen before to their lands and began "bonding" with the denizens of the Flower Grove. A few of them even brought other Purrloin, so that Siren no longer felt like she had a single thing that made her exceptional or different. She felt like everyone liked the humans more than they liked her, and that there was no place for her in a community where she couldn't be number one. So rather than try to adapt to this new way of life, or accept that it would be all right to not be special or different, Siren decided to run away instead. She hated her friend for one-upping her to begin with, and she especially hated the humans for taking the rest of the attention away from her. What was so special about humans, anyway? Why would anyone want to follow their instructions? Siren didn't get it, and what she didn't get, she decided to hate.
Wandering at a loss, Siren got hopelessly lost and ended up in the Inner Wildwoods, exhausted and frustrated at her lot in life. She fell in with a group of human-hating Pokémon and Shifters calling themselves "Minor Land", who also felt slighted by humans and challenged by Union's rapid expansion this year, as well as the idea of Pokémon serving humans in general (with Gigas's use of Poké Balls being an extreme example). What right have humans, argued Minor Land's leader, to trample all over Pokémon when Pokémon's natural abilities are so clearly superior? Why not trample over humans instead and plunge them into sorrow, in the hopes of garnering attention for their cause from the gods? Siren balked at first at the extremity of the hatred she saw, but enough propaganda (and a little brainwashing) fed into her wounded, petty ego and helped convince her she should only spread sorrow to the humans with her songs from now on.
So Minor Land's leader has dispatched her to Union, in the hopes of making the humans pay for their considerable "sins" against Pokémon. He just hasn't reckoned on Siren's need for affection potentially making her heart waver - to say nothing of how she talks the talk much better than she walks the walk. Siren is not beyond saving, not by a long shot.
But there's a lot of cartoon villainy to be had in the meantime.
Canon Personality: Imagine if Team Rocket all got lumped somehow into being just one person.
That’s Siren.
Alternatively vain, earnest, short-tempered, scheming, and easily-distracted, Siren manages to combine being Suite Precure’s comic-relief villain with a “serious” backstory. Though by nature a sincere, hardworking star pupil, Siren has been brainwashed by the leader of Minor Land into doing his melodramatic and wicked bidding (though she alternates between ingratiating herself and ignoring his complaints). Siren believes that all positive emotions are false and disgusting. It physically hurts her to hear happy music, and she goes out of her way to try and make people unhappy, each of her schemes to that end being more absurd than the last. She has a short temper, and is easily angered by anyone taking life in stride or otherwise thwarting her - she’s rather tyrannical as a superior, and has no qualms about taking credit for others’ actions while she lounges in the sun.
Siren's ego is not to be trifled with: she's accustomed to being the most talented singer she knows, and isn't satisfied unless the spotlight is on her (what hurts most about her friend Hummy winning the songstress position over her is knowing the judges chose right.) She sincerely believes flamboyant costumes are both beautiful and typical, and if there's an actual stage anywhere she's going to want to crash the party - so everyone will be listening to her instead. Bold and brash, she doesn't shy away from conflict - though she also possesses several humorous phobias, including ghosts and crabs, and will run once thwarted, preferring to scheme again another day instead of trying to fix a plan gone sour.
Siren runs from her own emotions, as well. Despite her harsh exterior, and the comic lengths her villainy and vanity take her to, she's starved for affection and relationships with others - her sense of self-worth is entirely based on external opinions instead of following the beat of her own heart. Siren's attention-seeking habits therefore stem from jealousy and uncertainty, though she still does honestly love music and singing. Yet she's afraid of her own failings and adrift without the security of "being number one", so she refuses to think about her own emotions.
Siren is equally afraid of trusting or growing close to others, and thanks to the brainwashing she doubts emotions like sincere friendship actually exist. But because she's also starved for affection and bases her self-worth on others' opinions, a simple kind touch is enough to leave her waffling between her current morals and her desire for closeness. Everything, especially her emotions, is all or nothing with Siren - she has a tendency to get absorbed in whatever she's doing and even occasionally forgets she's supposed to be tricking people, not actually befriending them. Siren would like to always come across as the perfectly-poised diva, but beneath the sneering facade she's an overdramatic, shallow dork.
Siren is nothing if not mercurial - though she can get carried away on her own "brilliance", act sweet if the situation calls for it, and outright delight in the sufferings of others, it's equally easy to knock her off her groove. Deep down, she is a serious and studious person, but she's also very literal and going through a rough, cynical phase, bringing out all the worst parts of her already high-strung personality. Basically, Siren does what Siren wants, and questioning her motives is an excellent way to coax a temper explosion (and/or make her brood).
But just try to pet her. You might be pleasantly surprised.
AU Deviation: Siren's personality in Brave New World is close, but not identical, to her canon self. She's currently much less fixated on defeating any specific humans than she is in canon, where warriors of justice called the Precure constantly disrupt her schemes - though if a PC makes a habit of thwarting her in-game she might start making overly-specific narrow-minded plans to make their lives miserable, too. For the time being, however, she's got her stock villainy cranked up to eleven - since Minor Land's pro-Pokémon, anti-human stance feeds into both her need to feel exceptional and her desire to lash out against humans, she's specist in addition to being an egomaniac: every human deserves to be plunged into sorrow and she's just the cat to do it! Her flunkies in Union will also be much more amenable than the bickering trio she has to deal with in canon, so she'll be even cockier for not having others constantly watching her, judging her, and trying to take the position of leader away from her. This is her solo concert! Nobody has a choice but to keep their eyes on her!
That's just how she wants it.....right?
Canon Abilities: Siren is from One of Those Canons that give the villains special powers whenever the plot demands it. I’ve broken them into two lists - things she can currently do and things that require special circumstances.
Things Siren Can Do
♪ The ability to transform into anyone she wants, including (sometimes) changing her voice. No matter what form she takes, however, she’ll always be wearing the same distinctive collar - and her ability to pass depends on her questionable acting abilities.
♪ The ability, in both her true and human forms, to attack people by throwing magical glowing music notes at them.
♪ The ability to sing the “Melody of Sorrow”, an enchanted song that makes anyone who hears it immobilized by depression and sadness, to the point they stop noticing their surroundings. Can be dispelled by someone playing positive music instead.
♪ The ability to put people to sleep by looking into their eyes.
♪ The ability to trap people in magical five-lined staff “ribbon”, making them unable to move their arms.
♪ As an alternate to the trap above, the ability to imprison people in a “bubble” of sorts (the staff-ribbon is more common).
Circumstantial Powers
♪ If she spots one of the magical Notes she's been sent to gather, Siren can create/control a creature called a “Negatone” by corrupting the Note and fusing it with an object. This will yield a monster capable of inducing the same effects in people as the Melody of Sorrow (unless they’re naturally positive people, or can’t stand bad music), though its other abilities will depend on the item used. Negatones also always look incredibly stupid, probably because Siren keeps picking items like a box of cupcakes or a cherry blossom petal.
♪ She can open communication to Minor Land in any mirror or pool of water - like a video chat with her evil superiors.
♪ If she’s able to feel strongly enough for someone (not necessarily romantically), Siren does contain the potential to transform into “Cure Beat”, a magical girl.
♪ Everything listed under "Things Siren Can Do" is apparently dependent upon her wearing her collar, as once her pendant breaks she’s unable to change her form.
Additionally, while she’s a cat and has been shown doing “catlike” things (having catlike body language, being unable to resist chasing toys, talking to other cats, curling up in the sun), for the sake of humor Siren has also been seen imitating humans while in cat form. She can write, for example, and has been seen running on two legs if her front paws are holding anything. She defaults to feline behavior, however, facial expressions and the occasional human-like pose aside.
Enlightened Abilities: Siren is a Purrloin shifter. As such, though born a Pokémon she will be able to take human form. She will also learn an Egg or Tutor Move approximately every other week in addition to the standard Purrloin/Liepard moveset.
Waaaay down the line, if Siren ends up breaking her brainwashing and joining the side of Good (or at least, you know, leaving Minor Land), I would like her to commission an Enhanced guitar imbued with the Fairy type. This guitar would allow her to attack others with its sound, much like how many Fairy-type Pokémon have sound-based attributes.
Also when she uses it, it makes her running her fingers through her hair sound like an electric guitar. Because reasons.
Notes/Special Considerations: I hope the creation of the Minor Land group is acceptable with this modified goal and philosophy. Given said philosophy and Siren's penchant for villainy, there's also a good chance she'll affect NPCs on multiple occasions. Minor Land's goal is to spread sorrow, however, not anything as extreme as mass murder, so she'll only earnestly fight anybody who stands up to her (in which case I am always open to her defeat - in fact, I'll encourage it). The rest will probably just be silly stuff like using Supersonic to make kids wander away from their parents in confusion and then start crying or something. Nothing she does should affect the "safety" of the city as a whole. She's just not good enough at her job for that.
